Castle French

On a rise in undulating pastureland. Marked 'Castle French' on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map. No visible surface trace survives. An extensive series of mounds, hollows and banks of earth and stone mark the site. Built by the French family in the 17th century, Castle French, Carrowreagh East is remembered for its historical association with the prominent local Anglo-Irish gentry and for being marked on the earliest Ordnance Survey maps, indicating its significance in the regional landscape.
