Carrig House

Farmyard complex, built c. 1810, comprising courtyard with rubble limestone masonry walls, having two symmetrical ranges of seven-bay two-storey outbuildings. Corrugated-iron roofs, single-pitched to west range and pitched to east range, with moulded limestone eaves courses. Roughcast rendered rubble limestone walls. First floor of each range has Diocletian-style windows with cut limestone surrounds, sills and projecting keystones. Ground floor of each range has round-headed window openings flanking square-headed doorway, windows having cut limestone surrounds, sills and prominent keystones and doorway having carved surround and moulded limestone cornice. Segmental-arched vehicular entrance to south end bay, having cut limestone surround, imposts and prominent keystone. Square-profile rubble limestone masonry piers leading to farmyard. Ruinous three-bay two-storey former gate lodge to north, having crenellations to roofline, rubble limestone walls, and pointed arch window and door openings with brick surrounds. Remains of outbuilding to west having rubble limestone walls, square-headed window opening with rubble limestone voussoirs, and elliptical-arched vehicular entrance with brick voussoirs and cut limestone jambs. Remains of Carrig Castle to east.

This farmyard complex, which once served the demesne of Carrig House, is a fine example of planned demesne building. The well-proportioned ranges feature classical motifs such as round-headed and Diocletian-style windows, enhanced by finely cut limestone dressings. The cut limestone door surrounds and eaves courses reflect the skill of local craftsmen. The site retains the remains of ancillary buildings such as the outbuilding and the crenellated gate lodge. The association of the complex with Carrig Castle or tower house is of importance and illustrates the development of this site for domestic use over several centuries.
