Roofless rectangular nave (12.4m ENE - WSW; c. 8m NNW - SSE), gable ended; lit by three pointed windows in SSE wall with hood moulding and block and start limestone surround. Pointed door ope, set in stepped recess, has block and start surround and a hood moulding; between ground and first floor, flanking door, are small lintelled window opes, now blocked. A church in Carrig was consecrated in 1715 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 83), probably first church built on this site- the medieval parish church was in Carrig Demesne (14401) c. 500m to S. Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 277) described its replacement (present ruin) as 'a neat small church, in the later English style, but without a tower, now in the process of erection on the site of the old parish church, part of the walls of which will be incorporated in the new building'. This was in order in 1860 but dismantled in 1899 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 2, 58; see photo of ruin opp. p 30).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
