Cangort Demesne hides a castle erased by Cromwellian guns in the 17th century, leaving no surface trace beneath the later Cangort House. The violence cleared the old stones, but the land kept the shape of the conflict. A new house rose on the wound, forcing memory to move indoors rather than disappear.

Built in the late medieval period, Cangort Castle was held by the Ó Cellaigh (O'Kelly) family of Uí Maine before being besieged and destroyed by Cromwellian forces during the 17th-century Confederate Wars. It is remembered as a site of resistance during the Irish Confederate struggle against English rule.
