Caltragh

In flat pastureland c. 40m N of a stream. Named 'Caltragh' on the OS 6-inch maps, this monument consists of a D-shaped enclosure (N-S 63m, E-W 61m) defined by a bank, and a shallow external fosse which survives from NE through E to SE. A shallow depression is evident inside the bank from SW through W to NW. The placename 'Caltragh' may be derived from the Irish 'Cealtrach', an old burial ground (Joyce 1923, 98).
