Caltragh Fort

Towards the S end of a slight NW-SE ridge. Depicted as a large circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 70m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and described as 'Caltragh', meaning a burial ground, on the 1837 and 1915 eds. Circular grass-covered area with some bushes (diam. 62m WNW-ESE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4-6m; int. H 0.6-1m; ext. H 1.25-1.65m), surviving best NNE-SE and W-WNW but disturbed by a quarry at N and truncated by a NW-SE field bank at S. There is a slight outer fosse (Wth of top 4.4m; Wth of base 1m; D 0.35m) E-SE, and the entrance (Wth 2m) is at E. Two low radial banks from the perimeter at W and SW meet just SW of the centre, and two fragments of a rotary quern (RO047-001002-) are at the monument.
