Cairn

In pasture, on top of a ridge with excellent views in all directions. A roughly circular cairn (18m N-S; 20.6m E-W; max. H 1.40m) of grass-covered limestone stones. The cairn has been extensively disturbed at the centre and in the NW quadrant giving it an irregular appearance. Traces of a 'probable fosse' were noted along the N edge during a previous inspection (pers. comm. M. Keane and J. Farrelly). A large split slab (3.2m x 1.65m; T 0.65m) of weathered limestone lies flat near the NE edge. This stone is known locally as the 'Split Dolmen' or the 'Giant's Grave'. A second smaller slab (0.75m x 0.8m; T 0.2m) protrudes at an angle of c. 45 degrees from the cairn material to E of centre. A roughly circular cairn, likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, possibly a funerary monument. Its location on a prominent ridge suggests it may have had ritual or territorial significance.
