What is recorded here
Cairn is one of five small stone heaps in County Kerry, Ireland, where people cleared fields before peat swallowed the land. One heap leans against a large boulder, shaping like a marker or a shelter from wind. The bog has since covered the stones in up to thirty centimetres of peat, hiding the edges of that older working landscape.
This is one of five clearance cairns (KE035-073023-; KE035-073030-; KE035-073031-; KE035-073032-) described by Cuppage (1986, 26, 25 (w)) as follows; 'These 5 heaps of small stones, 3m x 2m x 0.35 to 0.5m high on average, are overlain by up to 0.3m of peat and may be field clearance cairns related to the pre-bog field system. One of the cairns has been heaped against a large boulder, a common practice even today. The locations of these cairns are shown on fig. 14 (ibid., 22-3)'.
Clearance cairn, likely post-medieval in date. These cairns represent agricultural activity rather than funerary or ritual use, signifying land clearance for farming.
