What is recorded here
Five shallow stone heaps still lie beneath up to thirty centimetres of peat in County Kerry, perhaps marking fields abandoned before the bog advanced. One was piled against a large boulder, a practical gesture repeated even today. They are small enough to overlook yet persistent enough to suggest that people worked this land, removed its stones and left the shape behind.
This is one of five clearance cairns (KE035-073023-; KE035-073029-; KE035-073030-; KE035-073032-) described by Cuppage (1986, 26, 25 (w)) as follows; 'These 5 heaps of small stones, 3m x 2m x 0.35 to 0.5m high on average, are overlain by up to 0.3m of peat and may be field clearance cairns related to the pre-bog field system. One of the cairns has been heaped against a large boulder, a common practice even today. The locations of these cairns are shown on fig. 14 (ibid., 22-3)'.
Clearance cairn, likely post-medieval in date. These cairns represent agricultural activity, formed from stone cleared from fields rather than having a funerary or ritual function.
