Burnt mound in Lionsden

Situated on the W bank of the S-N Blackwater River and c. 50m from the canalised stream. Archaeological monitoring (02E0194) of topsoil stripping in advance of the development of a gas pipeline identified a burnt mound (dims 8.9m E-W; 6.4m N-S; T c. 0.1m), which was preserved in situ (BGE: 1A/40/1). Burnt mound in Lionsden is a Neolithic or early Bronze Age ritual or industrial site, characterised by the presence of heat-shattered stones and ash. Its location near the Blackwater River suggests it may have been part of a broader network of prehistoric activity in the region.
