Burnt mound in Curraduff (duhallow By.)

In pasture, on a SE-facing slope. This burnt mound was discovered during archaeological test trenching in advance of the construction of an electricity substation (Ní Loingsigh 2002a). It consists of a subcircular mound (13.5m E-W; 13m N-S) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. Removal of topsoil from the E part of the mound showed that the mound material was darkest in colour towards the centre and that it changed gradually to orange-brown at the edges. The western part of the mound lay outside the development area and was not excavated. A fulacht fia (CO022-044----) lies c. 30m to the SW. (Ní Loingsigh 2003, 40-41).
