What is recorded here

No wall, roof or foundation still shows above ground, but the parish church of Clonfert stood within the south boundary of the oldest graveyard, its chancel and nave small enough to fit inside the burial ground rather than beside it. It was reported in repair in 1615 and abandoned by 1694, then disappeared from the 1842 map, leaving only the graves to mark where worship once happened. A grave dug in the 1940s uncovered part of it, proving the church had not vanished so much as been buried under the people it had served.

In graveyard (14566). No visible surface trace of parish church of Clonfert. This was reported 'in repair' in 1615, but abandoned by 1694 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 129-30); no church shown here on 1842 OS 6-inch map. According to Allen (1973, 18), it was 'a small building, consisting of a chancel and nave'. According to local information, church was situated inside S boundary of oldest part of graveyard (to SE), and part of it uncovered when grave dug in 1940s.
