What is recorded here
Kilmainham is a burial ground where two adults lay head west on a ridge summit during the early medieval period. They wore no jewellery except perhaps a small stone bead, and they were cut short by later digging. The land kept their bones beside cereal kilns and an enclosure, suggesting ordinary life continued around death rather than stopping for it.
The later part of the Iron Age (88 BC – 500 AD) and the early part of the Early Medieval Period (500-11 AD) are represented by a rectangular enclosure, two inhumations, and the use of cereal-drying kilns. Two inhumations were located c. 5m W of Structure 8, at the summit of the ridge. The remains were badly truncated, but both were supine and extended W-E with the head at W. The sex and age at death could not be determined but both were adults, and a sample of bone from one provided a C14 date of 434-598 cal. AD (UBA 12933). One fairly large perforated stone bead was recovered from one of the burials which could be a match for the smaller stone bead from the rectangular enclosure.
