Seven skeletons lay head-to-west in a single row beneath the Ballyneety sandpit when quarrymen skimmed the surface in December 1964. They had no grave markers, no vessels, no weapons, only bare bone aligned as if waiting for a direction rather than a name. The men reburied them locally instead of carrying them away, leaving the dead with the land that first gave them up.
Discovery of burials at Ballyneety were described by Cahill and Sikora (2011 vol. 2, 491-2) as following; 'In December 1964 human remains were discovered during quarrying operations at a sandpit at Ballyneety near Shanagolden, Co. Limerick. 162 The surface of the pit was being skimmed in advance of quarrying and it was during this process that at least seven skeletons were discovered at a depth of 0.6, 0.9m. The site was reported to the Gardai, who informed the National Museum. As the site was not investigated by Museum personnel, this account is based on the report of Garda Browne and Garda O'Dare of Shanagolden station. The burials were described as being extended, with the heads to the west, in a row. There does not appear to have been any associated artefacts, nor was there evidence of grave structures. The remains were not acquired by the Museum but appear to have been reinterred locally'.
