What is recorded here
Burial Ground in County Cork remains active inside a subrectangular earthen enclosure, its stone-faced bank guarding gravestones, a southern vault and a large Murphy family plot. First marked as GraveYard on the 1842 OS map, the place has continued receiving the dead while holding a possible off-centre church to the southwest. The laneway still leads north from its gateway, carrying living feet past generations already at rest.
Indicated as subrectangular enclosure and named 'GraveYard on 1842 OS 6-inch map; two small rectangular structures indicated, one in centre, the other in SE corner; possible internal division indicated by dotted line extending E-W off centre to N. Named 'Burial Ground' on 1905 OS 6-inch map and similarly indicated but without any internal elements. Within N half of early ecclesiastical enclosure (13885). Subrectangular area (c. 95m NW-SE; c. 65m NE-SW) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.4m). Bank stone-faced externally; inner face terraced (H 0.5m; Wth 1.8m) to W and in places to S. Many gravestones present; oldest noted dated 1790; vault on S side; large Murphy family plot in centre. Entrance gateway at N end of E side; short section of stone walling on each side; laneway extends to NNE to join with public road. Burial ground still in use. Possible church (14512) off-centre to SW.
