Burial ground in Grangeford Old

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Grangeford Old holds a forgotten burial ground, marked only on an 1839 map as a rectangular enclosed area. The earth has taken back every stone and fence, leaving no visible trace for modern eyes. Yet local memory still points to the exact spot, preserving the shapes of dead men long after the soil smoothed them away.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Marked 'Site of Graveyard' on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map and shown as rectangular enclosed area. No visible surface trace, but site remembered locally. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
