What is recorded here
Inside the Carranstown Great rath, a metre-wide stone lies flush with the earth, hiding a single worn basin. It is a bullaun marker, the kind where devotion repeated itself until rock became a cup. The rath still stands around it, keeping the shape of that forgotten ritual intact.
In the interior of rath (ME035-009----) there is a bullaun stone that is flush with the surface (dims 1m x c. 0.8m) with a single basin.

Likely dating to the early medieval period, bullaun stones were often used for the preparation of holy or ritualistic substances, such as communion bread, and are associated with Christian or pre-Christian sacred sites. This example within a rath may reflect a continuity of spiritual practice in the landscape.
