Bullaun stone in Bola Beg

Situated on a slight rise on the N bank of a WNW-ESE stream, which is c. 40m to the S. This is an early monastic site founded by a St Colman in the 7th century, according to J. O'Donovan, writing c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 245-66). The church (WX014-010001-) is within an oval graveyard (WX014-010003-) defined by an earthen bank. There is a bullaun stone (dims. 0.52m x 0.42m; H 0.2m plus) with a single basin (diam. 0.29m; D 0.14m) in the doorway of the church. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 26 April, 2012

Probably dates to the early Christian period, associated with the monastic site founded by St Colman. Bullaun stones were often used for ritual or practical purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a site for pilgrimages.
