Bullaun stone in Ballycook

Bullaun stone

What is recorded here

Bullaun stones mark where monks knelt until prayer wore flesh into rock. This one stands in the west quadrant of the Ballycook graveyard beside Kinneigh Church, still carrying that single worn hollow. It is not a grand monument, but a small record of repeated devotion, patience and bodily effort.
In the W quadrant of the graveyard (CW003-005002-) associated with Kinneigh Church (CW003-005001-). Earthfast stone with single bullaun. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 7 September 2009
Likely dating to the early Christian period, bullaun stones were often used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as pilgrimage sites. They may also have had pre-Christian significance, associated with healing or sacred wells.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
