What is recorded here

Two bridges across the Shannon are marked on the Down Survey (1656-8) Barony map of Leitrim barony, N and S of Jamestown. This is the only record of a bridge N of the town and is probably speculative as it was intended that a town would develop at Charlestown on the Roscommon side of the river as a county town for that county, but it never came to pass.

Explorer Tom Bastioned fort in Jamestown has the weather's long grudge against it, mostly due to constant drizzle. Sits on top of a drumlin overlooking the town, guarding nothing in particular. Wave at the cows, they're the real locals.

water pump481 yd

Explorer Tom Water pump in Jamestown was designed by a strict mother-in-law who wanted everyone to use it properly. It’s well maintained and has banding that looks like it came from a fancy dress shop. It's the kind of place you miss out on.

Jamestown HouseGate lodge · 500 yd

Explorer Tom Jamestown House gate lodge in Jamestown is hexagonal, like a giant stone honeycomb that lost its bees and most of its roof. The O'Beirnes probably built it to hide from their own family drama. Bring your own legend, I’ll lend you a hat.

Explorer Tom Jamestown had an unlikely celebrity friend who just wanted a quiet place to nap by the Shannon. The walls were built to keep people out, not in. Sit on a wall near it and pretend you're in a painting.

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in RueFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 524 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Fairy fort in Rue had the most dramatic event: a goat got stuck on the bank. It bleated for an hour while everyone watched. The field spoil is thick. Walk past slowly like you're in a film.

Explorer Tom Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart in Jamestown has an invisible twin across the Atlantic, waving hello every dawn. Its chancel stares right at you like it knows your secrets. Bring a flask and preteen enthusiasm to match its mid-century swagger.
