Bridge in Coolskeagh has had its railway embankment removed but remains standing over the road. It’s a stone version of the tablecloth trick, except somebody pulled away half the countryside and left the good china looking furious.
Single-arch stone former railway bridge, built 1849, carrying embanked Dundalk to Enniskillen railway line over road. Round arch having rock-faced rusticated voussoirs, chamfered margined and brush-hammered impost course. Snecked cut-stone abutments with rock-faced rusticated stone quoins to abutments. Brick soffit to arch. Snecked cut-stone walls and splayed buttressing walls with chamfered cut-stone coping. Embankment has been removed.
The simple form of this bridge, along with the articulation achieved through stone dressing, is typical of several railway bridges on this railway line and displays skilled stone masonry in the variety of treatments used. The rock-faced treatment to the voussoirs and quoins emphasises the structural strength of the bridge. It is a visual reminder of the Great Northern Railway which closed in the mid-twentieth century.
