Bawn in Powerstown

On ground sloping gently to NE in a farmyard with an unoccupied farmhouse to W and range of farm buildings on NE and SE side. Rectangular tower house (TS077-087001-) with remains of a possible bawn wall (H 2m), now pebble-dashed with concrete cap, runs NE for a distance of 1.8m from the N end of the NE wall of tower house and joins up with a two-storey farmhouse. Lyons (1938, 153-4) refers to an rectangular earthwork which originally enclosed the tower house which was in the N corner. According to Lyons the only part surviving is the S angle with a length of the SE and SW side, this area was densely overgrown at time of inspection making examination impossible. In the OS Letters there is some reference to the bawn wall which was 'still seen at Mr. Kennedy's house where a part of the castle is still preserved being used in the walls of a dairyhouse' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 147).
