Bawn in Mullaghnoney

Remains of bawn (dims. 66.7m N-S; 37m E-W) visible SW of tower house (TS076-042001-), at a slightly lower level. Bawn is described in Civil Survey (1654-6) 'Upon the sd lands stands a castle, the walles of two houses with a bawne about them' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 303). The tower house is located on limestone outcrop in the NE angle of the bawn. Lot of disturbed ground in interior. The bawn is delineated by a low broad bank on W and S side (Wth 8.2m; H above int. 0.69m; H above ext. 0.18m), by scarp on N side (Wth 3.8m; H 0.86m) and by quarry face on E side. The Bawn in Mullaghnoney was associated with a tower house and documented in the 1654–5 Civil Survey, indicating it was held by a local Gaelic or Anglo-Irish family during the 17th century. Its remains are important as they provide insight into early modern defensive and domestic architecture in the region.
