Bawn in Maidstown

Ballyvenoge (Baile Bheanóg) Castle (LI039-074----) and bawn in the townland of Maidstown (Baile Bheanóg). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that in 1641 John Fox of Ballyvenoge was the owner of 'a good castle, a Bawne, an orchard, & indifferent houses' (Simington 1938, 124). The precise location of the bawn has not been identified but may have been located to the N of the tower house (LI039-074----). Ballyvenoge Castle and its associated bawn in Maidstown were owned by John Fox in 1641, as recorded in the Civil Survey of Limerick. The site is remembered as part of the historical landscape of early modern Ireland and reflects the presence of English settlers in the region during the 17th century.
