Bawn in Ballybar Upper

Bawn

What is recorded here

Bawn in Ballybar Upper is a ghostly circular mark in County Carlow, perhaps the buried edge of a castle bawn now hidden beneath grass and memory. The wide fosse and faint outer ridge still trace the shape of a place that once kept people, goods or secrets inside its ring. What happened within that circle has faded, but the land still holds the outline of a boundary drawn in another time.
Cropmark of a circular enclosure defined by a wide fosse, with traces of a narrow outer fosse, visible on aerial photograph (GB 89. 32). This may be the remains of a levelled bawn associated with the castle site (CW012-015----). Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 11 January 2012
