Granard killed men on both sides in 1798 while French troops bled at Collooney. The town still stands with churches, schools and a police barracks, unchanged in name but hardened by what it absorbed.
The Battle of Granard took place on 5th September, 1798, the same day that the French Army was attacked at Collooney, Co. Sligo. The battlefield site is located in and around the town of Granard, Co. Longford. The town is well established on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey maps, with churches, schools, a police barracks, post office and a dispensary.
