Barrow

Barrow, unclassified

What is recorded here

Barrow stands as an unclassified ancient mound in County Louth, Ireland, where local tradition claims bones once surfaced during ploughing. That warning transforms ordinary farm work into a dangerous intrusion, suggesting the soil still protects a forgotten death. The mound may have marked a boundary, honoured a hero or hidden a victim, yet no clear purpose survives. It remains a quiet trap, waiting for a plough to break its patience and release what it has held back.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Soilmark during ploughing in field known locally as 'Mount field'. Local tradition of bones being unearthed.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
