Barrow

On flat wet pasture 90m S of townland boundary with Ballycullane and Grange, 1.6km WNW of Lough Gur. The ring-barrow (LI031-176006-) is one of nine ring-barrows with an enclosure (LI031-076001/5-; LI031-076007/8- and LI031-177001/2-) in a ring-barrow cemetery within a 200m radius. The ring-barrow is not depicted on historic OSi maps. It is visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and faintly on later Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 36.04: AP 4/3644) as a circular ring-barrow (ext. diam. c. 5.5m). The ring-barrow is faintly visible on the Google Earth orthoimage taken 05/04/2006, but not on the latest Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. Ring-barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Its association with a group of nine barrows suggests a significant ritual or funerary landscape, possibly linked to early farming communities in the region.
