Barrow

Barrow, ring-barrow

What is recorded here

Barrow is a ring-barrow in County Kildare, Ireland, lying between the Gibbet Rath and the Curragh Military Camp. Its central mound rises two metres across twenty-five metres, enclosed by a fosse and earthen bank thirty-eight metres wide. Whins are creeping into the disturbed interior, perhaps marking the place where human hands stopped tending it and nature resumed its old claim.
Lies between the Gibbet Rath (KD023-042----) to the W and the Curragh Military Camp to the E. Another ringbarrow (KD023-044----) lies c. 160m to the NE. A raised, central, circular area (diam. c. 25m, H 2m) is enclosed by a fosse and an external earthen bank (overall diam. 38m). Causeways and gaps at the NNE and S are possibly modern, and there is some disturbance to the interior, upon which whins are starting to establish. A ring-barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age, associated with funerary practices of the period; its location amid other barrows suggests it is part of a wider ceremonial or burial landscape.
