Móinteán an t-Rígean, or Fairy Hill, stands as a flattened scar in County Cork pasture, its fifteen-foot height destroyed when a tenant levelled the mound to claim more land. That act of greed unearthed three cists holding human remains, proving the fairy tale was a veil for forgotten ancestors. The mound still resists the plow in a small untilled patch, keeping the dead intact while the living forget what they buried.
In pasture, atop hill. Heavily overgrown, roughly circular mound (max. H 1.55m; c. 14m E-W; c. 13m N-S). According to Coleman (1894, 35) locally called Móinteán an t-Rígean (Fairy Hill); 'It stood fifteen feet high; but was levelled by the present tenant all but a small portion, which yet remains untilled; during levelling 'three cists or graves were found 'containing 'human remains'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
