Barrack Hill Community GardensGarden · 104 ydExplorer Tom Follow the growers on Barrack Hill and you will find sixteen raised beds and three polytunnels. One starts the seedlings; the other two keep things growing. I could claim to know their secret for a good tomato, but the gardeners would catch me bluffing before I got through the gate. These are working plots, so ask the committee before going in.
Barrack Hill Town Park PlaygroundChildren's playground · 128 ydExplorer Tom At Barrack Hill, little legs get the climbing frames, swings, balance beams and monkey bars. The roundabout was designed to include more children, and older ones have their own obstacle trail nearby. If I were seven, I would call the monkey bars a test of courage. If I were a parent, I would be looking for the covered shelter. Carndonagh's park committee says local families helped shape the refurbished playground, and the older children's activity area reopened in 2023.
Former Ballylosky Fairy FortFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 246 ydComputer-made pictureExplorer Tom Former Ballylosky Fairy Fort was marked as a single ring on an old map. The survey found no trace in what it described as a garden, though the shape of the ground suggested an earthen enclosure. A map line and a land shape are clues, not a surviving wall.
Explorer Tom Carndonagh's Church of the Sacred Heart was built from 1941 to 1945 and is dated 1942. Rock-faced granite walls lead up to a copper-covered dome, with figures of Columcille, Patrick, Brigid and the Sacred Heart around its drum. Its separate clock tower and coloured glass make the building hard to mistake for anything shy.
Millbrae HouseHouse · 263 ydExplorer Tom Millbrae House has stood in Ballylosky since c. 1870, keeping its half-hipped slate roof and fancy porch intact while the world rushed past. It’s a proper survivor in Carndonagh’s southern suburbs, with those console brackets adding a touch of drama to the eaves. Give it a nod; it’s still holding the line.
GrottoWayside shrine · 310 ydComputer-made pictureExplorer Tom Grotto is a wayside shrine in County Donegal. It’s a tiny cave for thoughts and prayers, probably the perfect spot to escape the wind. I reckon it’s where you go when you need to whisper something important to the universe.
Diamond CaféCafé · 405 ydExplorer Tom Diamond Café promises regional salad that tastes like it was harvested by a confused hedgehog. If you see a diamond in the soup, eat it quickly before the manager notices your gluttonous greed.
Visit CarndonaghVisitor information · 434 ydExplorer Tom Visit Carndonagh in County Donegal bragged about surviving a storm that only had three waves, but it told the story for hours. Spot the oldest stone and give it a name, preferably one involving a pirate.
Farren's RestaurantRestaurant · 463 ydExplorer Tom Farren's Restaurant is serving up mystery meat with a side of confusion. I bet their specials change faster than my mood swings do every Tuesday.
Carndonagh Early Church GraveyardGraveyard · 836 ydExplorer Tom Carndonagh Early Church Graveyard makes me slow the map down: it surrounds an eighteenth-century church thought to stand where an earlier church stood. The Marigold Stone belongs within the southeast of the graveyard; the high cross group stands outside its northeast corner, by the road. Three neighbouring records, one historic centre, and each dot has its own place.
CrocknakilladerryMountain / peak · 1.2 miComputer-made pictureExplorer Tom Crocknakilladerry is cursed to make anyone who doesn't wave at it trip over their own feet within the next hour. I waved, so I'm safe, but you haven't confirmed your intentions yet. Bring a jacket; it's never as warm as I promise.
CrockrooskyMountain / peak · 2.5 miComputer-made pictureExplorer Tom Crockroosky sits in County Donegal, yet the account says access is unknown. I reckon that means you have to guess your way up it! It’s a peak with no instructions, which feels perfectly chaotic for a mountain.
