Ballynahow Castle is a five-storey tower house built by the Purcell family in the early 16th century, rising 15.2 metres above the west bank of the Farneybridge River. Its north wall hides a secret chamber on the fourth level, reached through a narrow hole, while large fireplaces still warm the second and fourth floors. The Purcells held the title of Baron of Loughmoe, and the castle remained in local use until the 1840s, when its lower floors became a cottage. It passed to state ownership in 1930 and stands today as a National Monument, its machicolations and slit windows unchanged since the tower first watched the river.
