What is recorded here
Ballycahill is a settlement deserted (medieval) in Ballycahill (Ballycahill parish), Garrynamona, Moneydass, County Tipperary, Ireland. The town stood on a low rise in undulating countryside and held borough status, with burgesses paying seven pounds for eight and a half carucates of land in 1303. Later records show that payment falling to twenty shillings in peace and disappearing during war because of the Irish.
Situated on a low rise of ground in undulating countryside. There are several references which confirm Ballycahill's borough status. In 1303 the burgesses of Ballihaill paid £7 or 10.5 marks for 8.5 carucates of land (Bradley 1985, 57). In 1338 it was recorded that the burgesses used to render 8m, but now only 20s in time of peace, and nothing in time of war because of the Irish (Graham 1977, 16; Martin 1981, 35). Also known as Ballyhaghill.
In 2000 archaeological testing by Brian Hodkinson of a new public house and car park revealed a linear feature or ditch with fill of 18th century date and a second feature that was not fully excavated. Carried out under licence No. 00E0031 (Bennett 2002, 322).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
