Ballymagrorty Scotch Burnt Mound

In pasture, located on the bank of a W-flowing stream/drain, in the base of an E-W valley. The stream (Wth 2m) has been dredged in the past, and small mounds of upcast soil line the N bank in parts, though not in the vicinity of the burnt mound. On OS 25-inch plan, a ‘Spring’ is marked on the S side of the stream a few meters to W of the location of the burnt mound. The spring is no longer evident. This burnt mound is visible in section in the N bank of the stream. In the exposed section face (H 0.6-0.7m) a band (L c. 4m E-W; T c. 0.1m) of charcoal-rich soil and burnt stone fragments occurs immediately beneath the sod layer (T 0.1m) and overlies a layer (T 0.25-0.3m) of peat which in turn overlies a basal layer of sand. The S bank of the stream is largely obscured by grass but a very small eroded section also reveals what appears to be burnt material. No mound or rise is evident at surface level on either side of the stream.
