Arranmore Bastioned Fort

The remains consist of a rectangular enclosure (c. 45m NW - SE by c. 40m NW-SW) defined by earthen banks with an external fosse having two bastions projecting from the NE and SE corners. A pole or mast, named 'Old Telegraph' on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map (surveyed 1834), formerly stood at the centre of the enclosure. The precise date of this fortification is unknown. In form it could be of 16th/17th century date although the tradition of erecting this type of bastioned work continued into the 18th century and was used at enclosures surrounding the signal towers erected in the early years of the 19th century.
