Architectural fragment in Ardagh

In Templemore graveyard (SL034-048002-). A number of architectural fragments were identified in the graveyard in 1994 (pers. comm. Mary B. Timoney). They included a window head, various chamfered jambs (probably from a door and window) and a rectangular block of limestone (0.2m x 0.15m x 0.4m) with one end carved in the form of a human head;the remainder squared-off in section (0.15m x 0.15m; L 0.25m). The facial features are badly eroded but the eyes, nose and mouth are just apparent. A noticeable feature is the projecting chin, the underside of which is decorated with a number of shallow radiating grooves. These fragments undoubtedly derive from the ruined church (SL034-048001-) and carved head may have been a voussoir in an arch. Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 7 October 2011
