Andrew Searle Hart was born in County Limerick on 14 March 1811, the youngest child in a large family that included brothers lost at sea and siblings who died young. He later became an Irish mathematician who wrote on geometry, studied at Trinity College Dublin, and married Frances MacDougal in 1840. His life moved from a childhood home in County Donegal to the lecture halls and examination rooms of Dublin, where he earned degrees and a fellowship before turning his mind to law and mathematical inquiry.
