Ancient Thorn; Site of Grave Yard

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Ancient Thorn marks a forgotten graveyard in County Kilkenny, preserving a burial ground older than memory. The D-shaped pasture still carries the shadow of lives buried beneath soil now grazed by livestock. That thorn may have grown through graves, marking death with living wood.
In pasture. Indicated on 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as an unenclosed D-shaped area, with an 'Ancient Thorn' indicated within it and named, 'Site of Grave Yard'. On the 1900-01 revision the area (dims. c. 40m NE-SW; c. 12m NW-SE) is indicated but not named. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 8 March 2022
