Abbey

In pasture, on a gentle E-facing slope. The remains of a rectangular structure (int. c. 17m E-W; 5.5m N-S) are evident in places as a scarp and in other places by up to three courses of a mortared stone wall (Wth 1.3m; H 0.6-1m); the E end-wall does not survive. The orientation of the structure suggests the remains of a small church and it could be a chapel associated with the pilgrimage to Achonry (see O'Rorke 1878, 417). The main ecclesiastical remains at Achonry, which include the cathedral (SL032-188002-) and graveyard (SL032-188003-), lie c. 100m to the SW. O'Rorke (1878, 422) noted that 'some hundreds of paces to the north-east (of the graveyard) are the ruins and rubbish of a building, which the inhabitants of Achonry call The College'. He is probably referring to this structure.
