William Howard Russell

William Howard Russell was born in Tallaght, County Dublin, on 28 March 1827. He became the first modern war correspondent when his Crimean dispatches forced Britain to confront battlefield suffering. Russell wrote the Alma account in a seized Russian account book and coined "thin red line" at Balaclava. His work turned distant gunfire into public knowledge and helped launch modern wartime nursing.
