White Castle

Nine metres of western wall and a small southern fragment still rise beside Whitecastle Creek, preserving the second-floor height of a early 1600s tower house. The Roche family of Kinsale may have built Ardcloyne Castle as both a home and a boundary marker during a time when English control was tightening around old Irish authority. Its gun loop, fireplace and overhanging bartizan suggest a household that valued warmth, pride and defence in equal measure. Much of its life has faded, but the remaining stones still outline the shape of a family asserting itself in an uncertain landscape.
