West Stell is a headland composed primarily of Old Red Sandstone, formed during the Devonian period around 400 to 360 million years ago. The rock was deposited in a shallow marine to fluvial environment and is notable for its resistant nature, which has allowed it to form a prominent coastal feature despite ongoing erosion by the North Sea.
