East Stell is a coastal headland composed primarily of Old Red Sandstone, formed during the Devonian period around 400 to 360 million years ago. The rock was deposited in a fluvial and deltaic environment and is notable for its resistance to erosion, contributing to the prominent coastal outline of the Fife coast.
