Weir

Weir, fish

What is recorded here

Weir is a post-medieval fish trap on the northern Shannon estuary beside Bush Island in County Clare. Its thirty-metre V-shaped post-and-wattle fence still points north-northeast to south-southwest, guiding silver fish into its mouth whenever the tide floods. The structure turns ordinary water into a hunting tool, simple enough to build yet clever enough to read the river itself.
On the N bank of the Shannon estuary adjacent to Bush Island. Described by O’Sullivan (2001, 301) as a post-medieval ‘V-shaped post-and-wattle fence in creek on upper foreshore, NW of Bush Island, oriented NNE-SSW to catch fish on flooding tide, 30m long. July 2000.' (O'Sullivan 2001, 204-5, 301, Bush Island 7) Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 21 August 2019
