Wedge tomb in Killeen (costello By., Kilbeagh Par.)

Wedge tomb

What is recorded here

Killeen holds a wedge tomb hidden beneath rough stony pasture, remembered only through a local source rather than visible stone. The land still carries scattered field clearance cairns, suggesting people worked and shaped that place for generations. The tomb may have been buried, broken or simply lost, but the pasture keeps the shape of what disappeared.
In rough stony pasture, dotted with field clearance cairns. This record was included in the SMR (1991) and the RMP (1997) as a possible wedge tomb based on information received from a local source (SMR file 1991). Inspected in 1997, no visible trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 January 2021
Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BC). Its presence contributes to the understanding of megalithic funerary practices in the region.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
