Wedge tomb in Doire Na Sagart — Report the wrong picture

Knockacommeen Mountain keeps a wedge tomb hidden beneath peat, waiting for a knife or shovel to reveal its stones. The chamber measures nearly two metres, narrow enough for one person to lie down but long enough for two shadows to touch. A second tomb stands seven hundred metres west, and a third may still sleep inside the forest. People may have built them for the dead, or they may have dropped from the sky and buried themselves in earth. Either way, the mountain remembers weight and shape long after names disappear.

Remains of this tomb were exposed in the course of peat cutting on the upper S slopes of Knockacommeen Mountain. The S and E sides of the roofstone (2.5m x 1.6m; T 0.17m) and part of the S side are exposed in the cutaway bog face. It consists of a chamber (L 1.95; Wth 0.9m at W, narrowing slightly to 0.84m at E), aligned E-W. Both the N and S sides are formed by two slabs and the E end is closed by a backstone (H 0.30m). The roofstone rests on the sidestones, backstone and on a pad-stone on top of the W end of the S side. A possible outer-wall stone is exposed immediately S of the chamber, slightly set back from the W end. A second wedge tomb (CO058-060----) stands c. 700m to the WSW and the remains of a possible third (CO058-075----) are within the forest c. 1.1km to the WSW. Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). Its partial exposure due to peat cutting provides insight into regional megalithic burial traditions in the area.
