Wedge tomb in Carrowcrin (tirerrill By.)

On rolling pasture with a view northwards to Slieve Daeane and north-westwards to Knocknarea. The structure is aligned W-E and stands in a mound of irregular plan (L 16.7m; max. Wth 8.8m; H 1.5m at W falling to 0.2m at E). Three collapsed stones at the W may represent a facade. To the E of these there is a gallery (L at least 7m; max. Wth 1.8m) represented by five orthostats to the N and six to the S. About 1.5m beyond the E end of the S side of the gallery there is another stone which could be an outer-wall stone or buttress. A line of outer-walling represented by three orthostats and two fallen examples lies to the N of the gallery. At the E end of this line there are three small displaced stones and another just south of them. A further example rests on the E end of the mound. There are three displaced stones in the gallery the largest of which stands on end. Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). Its alignment and location suggest ritual or ceremonial significance, possibly linked to landscape features such as Slieve Daeane and Knocknarea.
