What is recorded here

Wedge tomb in Caherdowney is a well-preserved gallery on flat boggy land beside the Garrane River valley, aligned east to west and still holding three roofstones above a chamber about three metres long. Its small western portico, septal stone, jambs and closely set outer walling suggest people shaped a narrow entrance before opening the tomb to the dead. The low mound and intact chamber imply it remained visible long enough to be remembered, reused or avoided on land where water and memory both move quickly.
On flat boggy land on N side of Garrane River valley. Well-preserved tomb, comprises gallery, aligned E-W, surrounded by closely-set outer walling. Short portico at W end (L 0.4m) separated from main chamber (L c. 3m) by short septal-stone set in front of two jambs. Gallery sides each represented by three stones, with inset backstone to E; covered by three roofstones. Traces of low mound around structure. (de Valera and O Nualláin 1982, 7, Co. 8) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009 See linked document with details from Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin, Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Volume IV. Counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary. (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1982)
Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BCE). Its well-preserved structure and orientation reflect typical features of wedge tombs found in the Irish Midlands, significant for understanding funerary practices and social organisation of the period.
