Freestanding water hydrant, erected c. 1870, on Main Street outside national school, with round, fluted shaft, moulded base and fluted domed cap with acorn finial. Plain round spout, with recent tap to another side of cap. Maker's mark below spout.

This hydrant exhibits attractive, well executed yet restrained detailing which enlivens the form of its utilitarian purpose. It is an important reminder of town life before the widespread provision of piped water supply.
