Water mill

Medieval watermill standing on the W bank of the Camoge River at the N end of the village of Knockainy that is depicted on the 1654-7 Down Survey map of Knockainy parish (NLI MS 718). The location on the Down Survey map suggests that the mill was located in close proximity to the clapper bridge over the River Camoge. The precise location of this watermill has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 182-3) recorded the following about Knockainy Mill; '1583 Awney Manor, the C[astle] [LI032-141002-] there entirely ruined, except the stone wall, with a great enclosure called the balne [bawn], a water-mill, upon the rivulet of Comocke," &c. (Des. R., 4)'. The Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Thady Grady of Killkillane was in possession in 1640 of lands in Any which included 'a Castle, nyne Cabbins & a Mill seate' (Simington 1938, 97).
